*DESIGN IN SOCIETY* Bilbao
Audiovisual interviews of people who are into fashion, architecture, social art and performances. I want to analyze what kind of effects provoke daily consumption of design in the society. My Idea is to make this research around the world, visiting the most trendy cities (Bilbao, Seoul, San Francisco, Doha, Helsinki, Shanghai…) chatting with lots of curious people and analyzing different point of views, reactions and ways of thinking.
IN BILBAO, my city.
I decided to start with my favorite and my own place, Bilbao. Some years ago, this industrial city chose to change into a service city, as many places in the world. Tourism is the economy power. In 1999, Guggenheim Contemporary art Museum was built with the intention of provoking new movements and different objectives in Bilbao’s citizen and entrepreneurs. What kind of effects has Guggenheim provoked? Is it true that now Bilbao’s society knows more about *»»!!*#, …what? What I can tell is that now Bilbao has more open minded people who have studied and experienced in Madrid, London, Barcelona, Berlin… and they are creating a good social/business movement inside the city. With this I don’t want to say that before in the Industrial moment Bilbao’s society wasn’t creative and active…no no, I’m referring exclusively to this Guggenheim effect… Do you think that our way of consumption has changed? Do you think that our way of dressing has changed? That’s why, I decided to meet with 4 different entrepreneurs in fashion, music and skate areas and chat with them about these topics.
1st Interview: Cris from Serie B, Fashion Shop. Bilbao.
Cris mix fashion and music. She is a music lover + she likes beautiful fashion designs. In spring-summer time, sometimes in autumn, every Thursday, you can enjoy outside the shop window a concert. Urban concept very related with the fashion designers that she is trying to introduce in Bilbao. Her opinion about the whole architecture and design show inside Bilbao is positive. She really thinks that in a near future the Guggenheim effects can influence in this society, bringing us new ways of thinking, consuming and dressing.
In this video, you can hear her thoughts about the effects. (In Spanish)
2nd Interview: Jarabo and Juan Pablo from FUCK. Skateboarding and fashion store, Bilbao.
Juan Pablo and Jarabo, these two young and funny boys from Bilbao City, have been doing skate since many years. Their dream was to work in something related to skateboarding. I spoke with them about the concept of their store and how they watch Bilbao. FUCK is a small and cute store. Full of skate knowledge, practical skate tools such as a good shoes, beautiful boards or comfortable pants and a big sofa where clients and friends can sit down, chat and watch skate videos etc. together. Jarabo and Juan Pablo are very social and open-minded boys. When I asked them about the whole transformation of Bilbao…They were happy, positive thinking and proud! They think that what it is happening in Bilbao is a natural step, from industrial city to design or service city. It is happening in many places. We compared Donostia with Bilbao – Donostia is France – they said. Donostia citizen have been very related to south french style. They defined Biarritz, Saint Jean de Luz… as the California of South Europe. hahahahh! It is true! And here, you can find a lot of stylish and different turist people. Bilbao has been an industrial city and Donostia a service city. They are more advanced in this things!
Here you can listen to them.
3rd Interview: Lore Arenillas from BELAZA GALLERY, Bilbao.
Sensitive and nice dialogue with Lore about her opinion of Bilbao, Design effects into Bilbao’s society and brief stories about her experience in international fashion design markets such as Bread & Butter Berlin + BCN, London Trade shows and small underground markets. She is very happy that Bilbao has this curiosity in Design , architecture and art but she remarked how basque people are traditional and classical. In my opinion, this can be a good combination for a new era inside the city.
Here you can listen to her ideas and opinion.;-)
4th. Interview with Patricia Álvarez from Moca Couture Bilbao.
Last winter I met with Patricia Álvarez in Bilbao. She introduced me her clothing selection for 2013 Spring – Summer season. In her interview, she is telling us about her favorite designer of Paris Fashion Week 2013, Clover Canyon, her visit to EXCELSIOR MILANO concept store and her opinion about what is happening in Bilbao with the design. In her opinion, going to exclusive catwalks of Karl Lagerfeld, Saint Laurent, Givenchy, Chloé is a waste of time. The catwalks are for fashion journalist and fashionist people. Her task in the Fashion Weeks is to see and touch the pieces of clothing. That’s why, she goes directly to the showrooms, negotiate prices and get in love with new collections. Amazing meeting! Almost 1 hour and half listening to her experiences in fashion.
Here you have a summary. Let’s play it!
*DESIGN IN SOCIETY* Helsinki.
Helsinki, my 2nd City.
Design in Society are audiovisual interviews with people who are into fashion, architecture, social art and performances. These conversations try to analyze what kind of effects provoke daily consumption of design in our society. The Idea is to make this research around the world, visiting the most trendy cities (Bilbao, Seoul, San Francisco, Doha, Helsinki, Shanghai…) chatting with lots of curious people and analyzing different point of views, reactions and ways of thinking.
*Design in Society* Helsinki, after more than 30.000 visits and hundreds of follower, I am determined to continue reaching out and bringing interesting content to my audience. *Design in Society* was launched in Bilbao last spring and now, in Helsinki, is a collaboration between Kinetic Pixels and me. We met with Johanna Vuorio from NIKARI, Wood Design Furniture, Fiskars and Sasu Laukkonen Main Chef of Chef&Sommelier Restaurant in Helsinki. Both of them, are in english. It was a big challenge but when you are dialoguing with people who are nice and professional, it is very easy.
Here you have the interview with Johanna Vuorio from NIKARI. (IN ENGLISH)»All the Designs are, in a way, silent. They have some kind of soul» & «During the World Design Capital in Helsinki was our year to present NIKARI way of working».

Sasu Laukkonen Chef&Sommelier Restaurant cook speaks to us about «The Beauty of the Tasting». During my last year in Helsinki, I had the chance to work in 2 Spanish Food Projects. One is Goola, an online food shop and Alambique Oy. Both wanted to bring the best tasting pieces of Spanish food to Finland. My last months, I have been visiting professional chefs in the city. One of them was Sasu Laukkonen. A creative, humble and marvelous cook! I knew him in one of my selling appointments and after 1 hour of conversation with him, I proposed to make an interview. It was amazing chat with him. His way of expressing and speaking about ingredients and food designs made me to think more about the richness that we have in Spain. We have a high quality food and land. We are lucky!
Of course, everything has been possible thanks to my friend and best professional Jose M. Sanchez of Kinetic Pixels and my boyfriend, Tuomas Kuure.
